Artists’ Books Online

The core of ABsOnline is the presentation of artists’ books in digital format. Artists’ Books Online is designed to promote critical engagement with artists books and to provide access to a digital repository of metadata, scans, and commentary. The project serves several different communities: artists, scholars and critics, librarians and curators, and interested readers. ABsOnline consists of files that display artists’ books, exhibits, essays, and links to other collections or resource materials for this field. There is an index of agents (authors, publishers, binders, printers etc. of books and works represented), titles (of works, books, and sometimes objects), contributors (authors of essays, exhibits, commentary), and of collections and other resources.

Rethinking Archives

Rethinking Archives began as a project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Arnolfini, the centre for contemporary arts in Bristol, UK. Archiving Arnolfini raises all sorts of practical and conceptual questions, since the majority of its programme is performance or live art and exhibitions, all variously transient, spatial, immediate and experienced in bodily ways which documentation such as video and photography, can only partially capture. Rethinking Archives attempts to bring the specific questions that archiving Arnolfini raises to enrich our thinking and theorising about archives in general.

UbuWeb

UbuWeb was founded in 1996 by american poet Kenneth Goldsmith, as a site focusing on visual and concrete poetry. All work is done by volunteers, and their server space and bandwidth is donated by several universities, who use UbuWeb as an object of study for ideas related to radical distribution and gift economies on the web. Fifteen years into it, UbuWeb hosts over 7,500 artists and several thousand works of art. UbuWeb adheres to no one historical narrative, rather it is more interested in putting several disciplines into the same space and seeing how they interact: poetry, music, film, and literature from all periods encounter and bounce off of each other in unexpected ways. Ubu proposes a different sort of revisionist art history, one based on the peripheries of artistic production rather than on the perceived, or market-based, center. The site include a vast repository of papers about audio, performance, conceptual art, and poetry. There are large sections of artists simply placed together under categories of Historical and Contemporary. And then there is Ubu Editions, which offers full-length PDFs of literature and poetry. Among the 73 titles, authors include Tim Davis, Ron Silliman, Maurice Blanchot, Caroline Bergvall, Claude Simon, Jeremy Sigler, Severo Sarduy, and Juliana Spahr. And finally there is a ConceptualWriting wing which highlights contemporary trends in poetry as well as its historical precedents.
